LoveFilm’s film download service is by far the best available, offering great value for money.

What we liked:
LoveFilm is a well-known and trusted name in the world of online DVD rentals, so a film-download service is both a logical and convenient addition to its website. With around 2,000 paid-for movies, the selection of downloadable titles is nowhere near as extensive as the site’s standard DVD library but, thankfully, it hasn’t been padded out with rubbish that no-one wants to watch. As well as films, there are also sporting events, TV episodes and free short features to choose from, while the site benefits from a slick and simple download manager.

Prices for ‘download to rent’ movies start at £1.99. These are available in ‘high quality’ and ‘super high quality’ versions, of an average size of 500MB and 1GB respectively, though as the latter cost only 50p more it’s well worth the extra outlay to get the best picture possible. You have a week to start watching each film you download and can view it as many times as you like within either 24 or 48 hours of initial playback, depending on the offer.

For between £5.49 and £19.99, LoveFilm offers ‘download to own’ titles that you can keep forever. In many cases, particularly with newer releases, a single payment covers the cost of a downloadable copy for your computer, one for a portable device and even a DVD version, which is sent to you through the post.

How it can be improved:
It’s frustrating that downloaded films can only be watched through Windows Media Player 10 or 11 and on Windows XP or 2000, although Vista compatibility is promised soon. Portable devices must be Windows ‘plays4sure’ compatible to play the DRM-protected content.

Our verdict:
LoveFilm’s film download service is by far the best available, offering great value for money and the convenience of not having to wait for the post. It would be good to see the choice of titles extended soon to match the DVD selection.
