Fans of music band U2 are being warned not to purchase tickets for upcoming shows on the back of rumours.

A message on the Irish band's official website, U2.com, denies reports that tickets "are becoming available for planned U2 shows".

"The reports are mistaken, there are no tour dates for the band at the moment - so please don't buy tickets for U2 shows you see advertised," the warning continues.

The group added that any announcement about a tour and dates will be made on U2.com.

Rumours and reports of an upcoming tour tie in with the fact that the rock group are expected to release an album later this year.

The band have being working with producers including Rick Rubin, Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno since 2006 on new songs.

Hundreds of sports fans recently discovered that they were duped by a ticket website purporting to be selling tickets to the Olympics starting this week in Beijing.
