Amy Winehouse's cockney accent has been voted the most-hated regional twang in a new poll out today, with Cheryl Tweedy's Geordie accent selected as Britain's favourite celebrity lilt.
But more interestingly, the survey, from hotel chain Travelodge, also found that while 85 per cent of Brits can understand European phrases only 46 per cent can decipher British regional dialects such as Geordie, Scouse and Cockney.
To combat our lack of local language awareness, Travelodge has launched free online UK Regional Lingo Guides designed to arm you with the right words and phrases when visiting places across the UK.
Or you could always try this English to Geordie translator if you really want to emulate X-Factor's Cheryl... you can learn phrases such as 'Howay Ashley, what are yee up te?'.
