Sony UK Press Statement
4th September 2008
Sony VAIO TZ Series voluntary inspection and rework programme
Sony UK has become aware of a potential design issue affecting the following VAIO TZ notebook PC models, which have been marketed in Europe since June 2007:
• All model numbers beginning "VGN TZ1" (e.g. VGN-TZ11XN/B)
• All model numbers beginning "VGN TZ2" (e.g. VGN-TZ21WN/B)
• Certain model numbers beginning "VGN TZ3" (e.g. VGN-TZ31VN/R)
Sony has identified that a small number of these units may have incorrectly positioned wires near the hinge, which could, in rare circumstances, cause a short circuit, and may result in localised overheating and deformation of the casing. As a precaution, Sony is voluntarily initiating a programme to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a rework of affected models.
Sony encourages customers to check whether their VAIO TZ notebook is subject to this programme and to contact Sony in order to organise an inspection and rework where applicable.
There are two ways to do this:
• Via Sony's dedicated website: click here
• Via Sony's dedicated toll free hotline: click here
For customers owning a VAIO TZ notebook subject to Sony's voluntary inspection and rework programme, Sony will arrange to collect the notebook, inspect and, where applicable, rework it, free of charge.
Sony UK would like to emphasise that there have been no reported incidents of this potential issue in products sold in the UK to date, and that a product recall is not required.
Sony takes the quality of the products its sells very seriously and makes every effort to ensure that the products it develops meet all relevant regulations and standards. We sincerely apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.
Nicolas Barendson
VAIO UK Business Unit Head
