What we like:
Remote XT integrates well with the operating system of compatible handsets, providing easy access to the service’s functions in a few button presses. Its simple, intuitive and easily navigated menu system links directly to the back-up facility, data restoration and a range of other functions, all of which is good. But what really makes Remote XT stand head and shoulders above the competition is the sheer diversity of data that can be backed up. You are not limited to saving text messages or even just contacts; with Remote XT, practically any data stored on your mobile can be backed up. This includes your calendar, tasks, notes, images, applications, bookmarks, and much more.
As well as manual back-ups, it’s possible to configure Remote XT to create automated back-ups every so often – a good option if you are forgetful. Different profiles can be created for scheduled back-ups of different types of data, so if you frequently add new contacts, they can be set to back up more often than, say, images. Equally useful, a ‘virtual drive’ can be used to store files should your device run out of space, so large files can be swapped between virtual and ‘real’ storage as required.
How it can be improved:
As with similar services, there is always the chance that your handset will not be deemed compatible, so it would be good to see the support range extended. But Remote XT is such a complete product that there is hardly anything missing. It’s not free like Mobyko, and it’s twice the cost of SIMshield, but when you consider the volume of data which can be backed up with such ease, it is a price worth paying.
Our verdict:
With the potential to back up virtually any data you have stored on your mobile phone, this is the most comprehensive tool available.
