AOL has made a big effort to improve its messaging software with the Triton edition of AIM. An attractive new interface lets you switch between multiple conversations quickly via tabbed chatting, launch voice and video chats with a single click, and share picture slideshows and large files with ease. The Buddy List now holds up to 5,000 entries and lets you import contact details from your email accounts, while Expressions enliven your chats with icons, sounds and smileys. The program is still limited in some ways – you can only converse with other AIM users and can’t leave messages for contacts when they’re offline.
