Comodo Firewall Pro offers an astonishing degree of protection for a free application, scoring an impressive 95 per cent in Matousec’s tests.

Upon installation Comodo downloads updates and scans for malware. After a restart, your PC’s network is detected and protection starts in earnest. The main interface lets you perform common tasks, including setting trusted and blocked programs. You may need a bit of technical knowledge to get the best out of these, but there is a help forum at http://forums.comodo.com.

Comodo is more intrusive than our Gold and Sliver winners, with more alerts and a browser toolbar. It can’t be beaten for price though.
