You may not have heard of GMX before, but this webmail service has a huge array of features and one of the best interfaces we’ve used. While the 5GB of storage may not be as generous as Google Mail’s current offering, it’s plenty for most people. One stand-out feature is the ability to add your existing POP email addresses to the GMX interface, with each account having its own folder, so you can manage all your email with just one service.
The interface is very simple to use and includes extra benefits, such as being able to set up vacation messages with an expiry date. The built-in spam filter does a great job, but can also be customised with white (accept) and black (block) lists for complete control, and there is a full virus filter. Within the settings you will also find an Experimental section, which includes useful tools such as sound notification for new email, colour themes and the ability to preview images in emails.
GMX lets you create up to 10 aliases for your account, which can be deleted at any time – very handy for getting insurance quotes or for registering with sites. As with a traditional Desktop email client, you can also create folders and rules filters, so that you can completely manage all your email.
GMX also offers full right-click functionality so, for example, you can right-click an email and choose to add the sender to your white (accept) list.
The service supports both POP and IMAP, so you can also connect to it from your traditional email client or mobile phone. Google Mail always sold itself on the power of its search function, but GMX’s is fast and works very well. Overall, an excellent package.
