Free Download Manager
Review Date : Sat, 2 Feb 2008
Take control of your downloads with this superior, group test-winning download manager. Oh, and did we mention that it's free?
In terms of features alone, Free Download Manager is miles ahead of the competition. All the standard tools you could want are present, so you can take control of everything to do with your download, from where it’s being saved to when it gets downloaded. The program describes itself as the ‘Web 2.0 download manager’, justifying its claims with a collection of interesting community features, encouraging you to leave comments on the files you’ve downloaded to provide future users with unbiased information about a file.
It doesn’t stick to standard downloads either. The software has a built-in BitTorrent client that you can use to grab those kinds of file, though you’ll need to allow uploads from your PC if you want to use it. It even has a Flash video converter built in, so you can save content such as YouTube videos to your PC and even watch them as they download.
The program monitors both Internet Explorer and Firefox automatically. You can also switch between three modes, which limit the amount of resources the downloads will take up. This flexibility means you can throttle back your downloads if you want to prioritise your internet traffic for another task.
There’s very little that this program can’t do when it comes to downloading, so if you want take total control of your downloads, Free Download Manager is a worthy addition to your software arsenal.
