TuneUp Utilities 2009

Tune up an old PC with some new software

The problem with tune-up programs is that while they can be genuinely useful, many of them seem to do little more than repackage Windows’ own tune-up software in a more coherent interface. Thankfully, TuneUp Utilities avoids this pitfall and, if your PC is starting to feel a little old and tired, this software could go some way to pulling it back from the brink.
We ran the software through its paces on a particularly well-used test PC, which often needs sprucing up after a few issues of Web User product testing. The program found a range of security loopholes and suggested some improvements for streamlining performance, from blocking adverts in Firefox for faster web browsing, to altering our Windows services to stop superfluous things running unnecessarily. We were pleasantly surprised by the things it picked up, particularly browser settings that might help improve the speed of your surfing, which were found in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera.
The software comes with its own defrag and disk clean-up tools, and will also work on the Registry. The further you dig, the more you’ll find in it – it’s a comprehensive set of tools.
Although much of this could be carried out with free software, TuneUp Utilities offers a convenient suite-based approach that should certainly improve the speed of your PC and might even speed up your browser.

Product Pros: Speeds up your PC and the web
Product Cons: Many features available elsewhere at little or no cost
