Webroot’s Window Washer has the best, most coherent interface of all the products on test. Cleaning terminology pervades the software so, for example, you ‘add bleach’ to your cleans if you want to use the software’s secure deletion option. While advanced users might find this a bit patronising, it offers an instant and recognisable way to picture what the different options are for.

You get specialist cleaning, such as erasing empty space on a disk and carrying out a full system wipe but, while Internet Explorer and Firefox are catered for, there’s no support for smaller browsers. It may not be the top option in terms of features, but the price is reasonable and you get what you pay for in terms of clear, simple-to-use software.
