CCleaner

This free download from Piriform is a long-standing Web User favourite. The software has changed little over the years, bar a few interface tweaks, and it wasn’t much to look at in the first place. It’s not even the easiest to use but, despite all that, it’s a comprehensive program that tells you exactly what it’s doing as you use it.

The main cleaning section offers two checkbox-style lists of things it’ll clean. These include all the major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Chrome) and various other applications renowned for storing unnecessary clutter, including Microsoft Office and Google Earth. CCleaner tidies up system files, such as clipboards and log files, and its scanning tool searches for common problems worth fixing. It can also hunt down and fix common Registry errors, which can help improve the performance of your computer.

For a free product, CCleaner is phenomenal. Just be careful not to accidentally install the Yahoo browser toolbar along with it.
