WOT (Web of Trust) is a community-based filter. Sites are vetted and rated by users of the service and various additional trusted sources. Like other internet filters, it adds colour-coded icons to search results. Dark green means a site has an excellent reputation, light green means it has a good reputation, yellow is unsatisfactory, orange means poor and red means very poor.

Hover your mouse over a symbol to see how that site rates out of five for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability (whether the site is safe for buying and selling), Privacy and Child Safety. The software also adds a button to your browser which displays the site’s WOT rating.

Armed with some excellent features, WOT isn’t quite as straightforward or widely used as Site Advisor, but it’s still a great alternative.
