The security experts at Russian computer security company Kaspersky have been quietly protecting PCs from viruses for years. Like most other security companies, it offers a full suite of software, so those who don’t wish to set up and configure security programs from different companies can secure their PCs against a broad range of internet threats in one installation.
Kaspersky’s suite is comprehensive, containing expected features like anti-malware and a firewall, alongside extras such as parental controls and application filtering. It has an up-to-date, informative interface that keeps the product relatively simple to use – it isn’t quite as friendly as the likes of Norton Internet Security, but more advanced users may prefer its quick access to tweakable features.
Kaspersky’s record on Virus Bulletin (www.virusbtn.com) is fair – it had a couple of failures last year, though both were for false positives, so you would not have got a viral infection as a result. It offers good all-round protection – the firewall is rated ‘very good’ by Matousec (www.matousec.com), and is the highest-rated firewall tested by the organisation that comes as part of a security suite.
The downside to a suite like this is the cost. You could protect yourself from viruses, malware and hackers for free by downloading, installing, configuring and supporting your own suite of tools. But for the money, Kaspersky does all this for you – you’ll only need to install the software to relax in the relative assurance that your computer is safe, and you can access technical support if you need it.
