AVG Anti-Virus 7.0

Review Date : Thu, 31 Mar 2005

A combination of automatic and manual functions makes AVG Anti-Virus both reliable and flexible in the way it detects and deals with viruses.

A combination of automatic and manual functions makes AVG Anti-Virus both reliable and flexible in the way it detects and deals with viruses. For example, the Resident Shield checks files and programs as they are opened and run, and the Email Scanner can be customised to suit your needs. You can schedule scans and updates to take place at a time of your choice, though AVG works unobtrusively even when you’re using other programs. There’s also a facility for creating a rescue disk, enabling you to boot up and remove viruses when your PC is infected. The program is relatively straightforward to use, although its two interfaces Control Center and Test Center, make it more cumbersome than rival software.

Verdict

According to Virus Bulletin, this seventh version of AVG is the most effective yet at combating ‘in the wild’ viruses, gaining the site’s coveted 100 per cent-detection award. Our only problem with the program arose from its occasional inability to heal the Trojans it found, suggesting it prevents better than it cures. However, by locating these infected files, it offers the scope to delete them manually.
