Identity finder helps eradicate sensitive personal information from your computer that could risk your security.
Do you know how much personal information you've got stored on your computer? If your PC were to get lost, stolen or hacked, what could someone find out by going through your files? For most people, the depths of their hard disks are unknown territory, whether it's because they share their computer with other family members and don't know what they're up to, or have had their PCs for so long that there are forgotten snippets of information all over the place.
Identity Finder aims to search for this lost and insecure information and provide you with the option of sorting it out. Like a virus scanner, it will search through your files and emails (POP mail only in Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Thunderbird) looking for sensitive information, from unsecured usernames and passwords in your browser, to credit card numbers and bank account details.
Once the scan is complete, each instance of a potential security breach is listed for your perusal, or you can launch a wizard to deal with each one case by case. Three options are open to you - shred it, encrypt it or ignore it.
Our searches found a number of instances of unsecured web-service passwords on our computer which, although they wouldn't cause a major security threat, could prove useful to an identity thief. If you use the same password for a number of web services, this could be an even bigger issue.
This software takes a different approach to security. It won't stop people from getting hold of your data but, if the worst comes to the worst and your files fall into criminal hands, it'll help prevent them from finding anything that could be used against you.
