Ad-Aware Plus 2008

Ignore both the free version of Ad-Aware, because it doesn’t have real-time protection, and the Pro version (£24.99) which has features you might not need, and instead go for Plus – which also has anti-virus protection. It’s cheap for a single-PC installation and has the real-time protection module, Ad-Watch. This is used to monitor running processes, the Registry, the browser cache, cookies, history, and so on, for unauthorised activity.

The interface is easy to use and it looks superb. You can schedule scans and there are smart, full and custom versions depending on how thorough you want to be. Helpfully, infections are scored so that you can see their severity. This 2008 edition is much better than previous ones and is a very potent spyware-blocking program.
