Taking into consideration the popularity of Apple's iPod, it's little wonder iTunes is regularly lauded as the media player of choice. Besides the almost seamless integration with the iPod, the program has a great deal in its favour. As well as creating custom playlists, automatic playlists are generated by analysing your music collection and the way you play it to create a 'recently played' and 'my top rated' playlist, among others.

When it comes to playback, iTunes can cope with a number of formats, but is only capable of converting to AAC. With the current interest in podcasts, support for this feature is a useful inclusion as well as the option of subscribing to individual downloads. iTunes also supports the playback of a number of video formats and links to the iTunes Store so you can purchase and download audio and video files.

The obvious advantage of using iTunes over other media players is its compatibility with the iPod. As this is still the most popular portable media player on the market, iTunes is the obvious choice for a music management system. Even if you don't have an iPod, the program's tools make it worth seriously considering as your primary media player.
