HP Officejet Pro 8000

This speedy printer makes an ideal office companion.

If you use your computer for work as well as for leisure pursuits, it might be worth taking a look at this HP printer. Aimed at the home office, it deftly handled heavy-duty letter printing in our tests, while also managing the photo and general-purpose printing offered by its rivals. However, while it was clearly the fastest of the printers on test and managed to produce very crisp text, the photo printing didn't quite match that of the Epson Stylus Photo P50 and Canon Pixma iP4700, which took our Gold and Silver Awards, respectively. Looking closely at the prints, we could see the dots, which might be fine in a brochure but will be disappointing if you want to print photos to store in albums or frames. It's a workhorse of a printer, ideal for workers, but a little uninspiring next to Epson's thoroughbred.
