This kit from SMC contains a Barricade N Pro broadband router and a USB adapter for less than the price of some rival routers. It isn’t the prettiest of units, but it’s fully featured, very easy to set up and it improved the speed of our network by nearly 40 per cent. The router doesn’t need a CD to install it and has a straightforward no-nonsense set-up wizard preinstalled on the device. Only after completing this and getting it running did we notice that it has WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), which we could have used instead to make our lives even simpler. When you see a cut-price product like the SMC kit, there’s always a worry that important corners have been cut in order to achieve a budget retail price, but it seems like the only thing missing from SMC is a bit of snazzy design. If you can live without that, you’ll find you’ve got a decent performer at a good price.
