The Flip Ultra HD offers excellent picture quality and several hours of recording time.
The Flip revolutionised the small camcorder market when it burst onto the scene two years ago and the Ultra (predecessor to the Ultra HD) maintained the popularity of the original. Now we have the Ultra HD, which sports a 2in LCD screen – not the biggest of those we tested, but bigger than its Flip sibling, the Mino. It shoots in 720p-HD resolution saved in MP4 format and has had an HDMI slot added so you can now view videos on a HD television.
For a compact model, the Ultra HD is a bit beefy, partly owing to the housing of rechargeable AA batteries. Also, the location of the USB port on the side of the device makes connecting the Flip to your computer a bit awkward.
But these are minor niggles. The interface is pleasantly uncluttered and all the software you need to get your video online is bundled along with some basic editing tools. What impressed us most was the sound quality and, while the zoom tends to magnify digitally, rather than optically, the picture quality and colour balance was the best we tested.
