We can't really talk about virus protection without looking at this free option, as this software from Grisoft has kept a lot of people very happy over the years. Not only is it completely free for home users and not-for-profit organisations, it does a pretty good job of stopping viruses from infecting the computers it protects.

The main difference you'll notice between this and its paid-for rivals, particularly those at the top of the heap, is in the way the product looks. This has none of the fancy refinement and design that the others have going for them, though it could still teach a thing or two to some commercial packages that don't take ease of use quite so seriously.

There are limitations though, and neither this software nor its commercial cousin have been submitted to the University of Hamburg for testing. However, it has recently good results in both the ICSA and Virus Bulletin tests.
