Yamaha isn't the only company trying to combat the cable mess created by surround sound speaker systems. Philips' HTS8100 Soundbar is a compact unit that should fit right in under any flat panel TV but promises a full surround experience without the hassle of wiring up multiple speakers around your lounge.
The main unit measures 935x146x136mm so it should slide in neatly under your telly and the accompanying subwoofer measures 295x446x295 mm. The Soundbar channels the front and rear audio tracks through six drivers, positioned to envelope the listener with sound. The system doesn't rely on bouncing sounds off walls, so provided you're in range, you can experience the effect wherever you are in the room.
There's an upscaling DVD player built in, so you can watch your DVDs in high definition, and it can also handle DivX encoded video.
The HTS8100 Soundbar costs £699.99, see the Philips website for further details.
