Majority of people still avoid web-based storage
A massive majority of people store important information on external hard drives, DVDs and USB sticks as opposed to saving it online, according to an F-Secure report.
F-Secure found that 95 per cent of people rely exclusively on hardware for storage, despite a third of them admitting they had lost important information by storing data in this way.
Pekka Mettala from F-Secure said: "With more and more of our lives taking place online, it's odd that so many people are addicted to hardware. But what happens if your laptop is lost or stolen and you have to say goodbye to your photos, music, contacts and other irreplaceable content?"
F-Secure's findings come on the same day the company releases Safe, an unlimited all-in-one online backup and Internet security solution, which costs from £5.83 per month.

I used to use the Yahoo Briefcase Service - they closed it! I tried online storage (Humyo) - it took so long to upload a couple of photos, it would take weeks to upload the 40GB of photos and camera videos I have. As Matthew so eloquently put it "but what happens if the online storage gets hacked. YOURE STUFFED". I'll stick to one copy on the PC, 1 backup on a USB attached HDD and a further copy on another HDD stored away from the PC.

Security issues aside, what happens if you want to store something that's legal in your country but illegal in the country that the server that is holding your data?

It is all a question of "Who to trust to safeguard your private data ?"
Private companies - example was PC World ( Dixons Group ) are on record as disclosing customers' data, as are many others. Even the "Government" cannot be trusted to keep secure anybodys' data in fact they even make it an offence to disclose they are spying on your data, so what chance remains for "privacy" ?
Safest place is your own equipment under your own close control - "Cloud Computing" is just that - away with the fairies on cloud 9 !
And don't bother with that old worn out cliche "If you've nothing to hide etc etc" THAT is the biggest con out ! Some of these little hitlers will wreck your data trying to find what's NOT there !
Ask some of the Dads from the FFJ what they experienced under the SS. It will make your hair curl.

I just don't have the confidence to allow anyone else to store my data. If Government agencies can be hacked, what chance do these online storage companies stand.
I'll stick with a separate HDD and DVD's to store my data.
