AVG frequently tops the charts in anti-virus tests and it's little wonder why. Despite the fact that the program is free of charge, it has more features than some paid-for products. In addition to on-demand scanning, AVG also offers real-time protection, adding an extra layer of security.

The moment your internet connection is available, AVG goes online to check for updates, which are installed before any other internet activity can take place. The opportunity to install updates is also made available during installation. We were pleased to see that despite real-time scanning and email checking, AVG did not lead to a noticeable drop in system performance.

AVG really stands out from the crowd when it comes to features and ease of use. The option to create a rescue disc in case a virus renders Windows inaccessible is one to be praised, and though the scheduler only allows for the two pre-defined scheduled tasks to be edited rather than the creation of new ones, as these cover updates and scanning, there's little else needed.
