Better known for pioneering the photocopier, Xerox now produces scanners in conjunction with Visioneer. Its top-of-the-range OneTouch 4800TA should prove ideal for home or small office users, placing the emphasis on versatility and speed. The unique sideways-on design is complemented by five 'one touch' buttons for sending scans directly to different programs, such as image-editor Ulead Photo Express or OCR application TextBridge (both included). The lid can be removed for scanning thick objects such as books and features a built-in film holder for slides and negatives.

Whereas other scanners need to pass over a document or photo twice in order to produce an auto-cropped scan, the 4800TA uses FlashBack Bi-directional Autoscan technology to do it in one pass. Little wonder then, that the scanner performed fastest in our tests, knocking two seconds off the speed of its nearest rival.
