Renowned for its low-cost CDs, DVDs and games, CD-Wow has applied the same cheap and cheerful approach to internet telephony. For just £1.99 a month, you can make unlimited calls from your computer to anywhere in the world, although calls to landlines and mobile phones carry additional charges. There's even a 30-day free trial to get you accustomed to the service.

Wow-Talk, or On4 as it's called once you install it, offers several useful features, such as the option of leaving a voice mail or text message when someone doesn't answer a call. Contacting other users is easy, and you can invite unregistered friends to sign up via email or use Directory Enquiries to find new contacts. The network itself can be a little slow and unstable, occasionally hanging up instead of connecting. That said, voice quality is very good and it even works over a standard dial-up modem.
