Winamp has long been heralded as the primary alternative media player, but its popularity has waned a little in the past couple of years. Although the program no longer receives the regular updates it used to, it is still well worth investigating.

For fans of customisation there are a huge number of skins available to change the Winamp's appearance. The program itself is a joy to use, with track and playlist organisation being a simple matter of dragging-and-dropping. Besides its ease of use, Winamp extendability is really useful. There are plug-ins galore, which can be used to add features, visualisation effects and much more.

With support for both audio and video, as well as online radio stations, Winamp can cater for all your media needs including CD ripping and burning. The program is something of a stalwart of the media-playing world, and not without good reason.
