WinRAR is a good all-round program that creates archives either as Zip (the most common compressed file format) or Rar files. The latter, the software's own proprietary format, offers several advantages, including the ability to treat all pieces of data as a single continuous stream, allowing a greater level of compression. The downside to this method is that if a single file is damaged any files that follow it will also be broken. To counter this, WinRAR usefully offers the option of creating and adding a recovery record to any archive. In the event of a file becoming corrupt, the software can use this record to repair it (it will still attempt to rebuild a damaged file without a recovery record, but its chances of success will be greatly reduced).
