Vonage is another service that slots a regular phone in-between your broadband connection and a network router. If you don't already have a router you can buy one from Vonage for a much discounted £14.99, but if you're running broadband via a USB modem you'll also need a new Ethernet modem to hook it up (available for around £30-£40).

Once you've got your hardware sorted, everything else is a breeze and you can make and receive calls without turning on your computer. Paying £7.99 a month gets you unlimited calls around the UK and the Republic of Ireland, which compares to about 12 hours a month (or three hours a week) of UK calls on pay-as-you-go services. However, you may want to look elsewhere for international calls, as Vonage's are cheap but not the cheapest.

Vonage is big on features though – you get an extra line to plug in another device like a fax machine, all the voice mail, caller ID and call waiting services you could want at no extra cost, and you can even reach the emergency services on it.
