Although the Umax impressed us with its speed, we were underwhelmed by its quality. The scans appear dark and over-saturated, forcing you to fiddle around with contrast and colour settings to make a photo look decent.
The scanner would benefit from better-integrated software, instead of requiring you to use a separate image editor such as the space-hogging MGI PhotoSuite III SE. On the plus side, the Umax is simple to set up and use, offering dedicated buttons for scanning, copying and emailing. No transparency unit is included but you can buy one for around £40.
