What we liked:
The How-To Geek contains lots of informative articles and blog posts on technical subjects, as well as a busy forum where you can discuss specific problems with other visitors. The site has a simple design that makes navigating its content straightforward, with links to categories such as Windows XP and Vista, Apple, Ubuntu/Linux, Microsoft Office and Other Geek Stuff, along with an accurate search facility.

Tips include useful projects and tasks that help improve your PC efficiency, and are thoughtfully illustrated by clear screen shots. Articles are generally short and easily digestible, letting you dip in and out of the site to brush up your skills.

How it can be improved:
Tips come in varying levels of difficulty so it would be handy to see an indication of the amount of PC experience needed to complete each one. More structured sub-categories would make it easier to find specific advice.

Our verdict:
The How-To Geek is a friendly site that offers a wide array of tips. It's nicely designed, but could benefit from a more structured editorial approach.

Sample tip:
Use the TinyURL creator plug-in for Firefox (http://tinyurl.com/2pb7f8) to turn long web addresses into shorter links through a right-click menu.
