This natty device from SanDisk does without a lid as it features a retractable USB connection. This means you'll never lose the cap, but open USB connectors can gradually fill with fluff when kept in pockets.

This is also a U3 (www.u3.com) compatible device, which means it can carry software applications and personal settings that you can take from one machine to another without having to install the software again each time. Software included on the Cruzer is comprehensive: a password manager so you can take your passwords with you; a portable version of Skype; Avast anti-virus; Outlook synchronisation software; and the ability to password protect the entire drive. On the downside, that's about a quarter of the drive given over to software, but it'll still take a while to fill up the remaining gigabyte and a half. Although all this makes running programs from the drive easier, it detracts a little from the ease of use of the basic storage concept.

The only serious downside is the device's speed. It was the third-fastest in our test, but there's a significant gap between it and the second-fastest Buffalo drive.
