Whereas most medium-capacity players ape the rectangular shape of the iPod Mini, the Rio Carbon has a sleek, stylish design all of its own. While it doesn't come in a variety of colours, its lightweight (90g), shiny silver body looks fantastic.

The Carbon's 5GB capacity provides enough space for 1,250 songs in MP3 format or 2,500 in WMA. It offers a microphone for voice recording and a stopwatch for exercising, but lacks other features such as a line-in port and FM radio. More impressive is the battery life, which at 20 hours per charge puts other mid-range models in the shade.

Verdict
The player's menu system is very straightforward to use, with a thumbwheel to help you navigate tracks quickly. However, it suffers from the absence of a Hold function to stop controls being knocked accidentally and it's also frustrating that you can't create playlists on the fly.
