Since we last looked at Pinnacle's offerings, the company has been taken over by professional video software developer Avid, which makes the software that edits most of the programmes we see on our TV screens. However, with the take-over occurring part way through the development of Studio 10, users of previous versions of the software needn't be concerned that a revolution might have taken place – the latest version remains comfortingly familiar.

Broken down into three sections (Capture, Edit and Make Movie), the software is easy to use on a basic level, and it can make editing as easy or as powerful as you want. You can produce video in a variety of formats, including Windows Media, though MPEG-4 and DivX require a plug-in that'll cost you another £6. Naturally, you can also output your work onto disc for playing in DVD players and there's a great menu-editing option built directly into the software. It's even ready for editing HD (High Definition) video, which is great for slideshows of high-res digital photos even if your video camera isn't compatible.
