The cheapest and chunkiest camcorder on test, the Pocket DV5 combines a traditional design with a strong set of digital features. You can tilt and turn its 1.8in screen through 225º, allowing you to shoot from a variety of angles, and operate its controls with a minimum of fuss. These include a dial for switching between the various modes – movie, still image, voice recorder – and a digital zoom. Video with sound can be recorded at up to 24 frames per second at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, while the 3-megapixel sensor lets you snap still images at an impressive 2,304 x 1,792 pixels.

Picture quality is reasonable for a device of this price, if a little dull and grainy, with a built-in flash enabling you to shoot indoors. It employs Compact Flash rather than smaller SD or MMC cards, but offers 16MB of internal memory to get you started (which is more than some of its rivals). The lack of a rechargeable battery may disappoint some, but we found it lasted for several hours on four AA batteries.
