If you have been connected to the internet for a while, you may have heard about newsgroups but not know exactly what they are. The newsgroup system, also known as Usenet, is a massive series of electronic noticeboards devoted to every topic under the sun, where users can post messages and read those left by others.

Although they originally started way back in 1979, newsgroups remain one of the most active parts of the internet and can be an excellent source of information. Messages are posted using a method very similar to email, so they can be written and replied to almost instantaneously. They are also archived so you can read batches of messages on an hourly, daily or weekly basis, depending on your needs.
