Magix has an attractive interface based on layers of tabs, so finding overall options is simple once you've mastered the basic structure. However, bottom-line options like the list of available transitions eventually end up in a tree-like folder system.

The biggest disappointment is that, in this version, some features require paid-for plug-ins, such as ripping DVDs or writing to MPEG 4. This may keep the price down but is frustrating when you're trying to explore its limits.

This version includes a handy direct upload to YouTube but those looking for HD need to upgrade to Movie Edit Pro Plus (£59.99).
