Just to make things confusing, there are two messenger programs from Microsoft – the woefully underpowered Windows Messenger that comes with Windows XP; and the far superior MSN Messenger that you have to download separately. The latter is the software you want, as it's littered with useful features. The key fact is that all PC users have Windows Messenger installed even if they don't have MSN Messenger, so the number of people with the potential to be contacted immediately is massive.

The latest version integrates well with other Microsoft and MSN services like Hotmail and blogging via MSN Spaces, pulling through information into the main Messenger window about whether you have new mail or have updated your Space.

Verdict
One of its biggest flaws is that you can't leave your contacts a message if they're offline – you get directed to sending them an email. Still, for all the things it can do, the software is hard to beat.
