Third place goes to Link Scanner: it's not perfect but many of the criticisms we're levelling have been fixed in the full $30 (£15) version.

Working as a standalone program, it hooks into whatever browser you're using – supporting IE, Opera and Firefox – and makes full use of integrated status icons with extremely informative pop-up information balloons, breaking a site's rating down into four warning levels with explanations and details for each one.

It's well presented, but the limitations of the free version – it is short on search-engine integration – still mean you could end up installing or downloading malicious programs and ActiveX controls, and you're not warned if you jump to a phishing site.Although you can manually request a scan, it's not the most convenient system available and could easily be improved by the simple inclusion of a 'scan site' button.
