This review updated: 21/07/2005 Featured in magazine: Issue 114 Manufacturer Contacts: Supplier: Lexmark Tel: 08704 440 044 Web Address: www.lexmark.co.uk Anyone interested in using their PC to store, organise and share photos will probably have a series of complex requirements. The ability to print your photos is likely to be key, especially if you have the option of either printing from your computer or direct from your camera, like a high-tech Polaroid. If you also want to scan in your old photos, this device has it all covered in one box. Features Like most modern printers you can hook this device up to a USB port on your PC and print to your heart's content. For digital camera users it also comes with a PictBridge connection for plugging in and printing direct from compatible cameras or, if you don't have a PictBridge model, you can slot your camera's memory card in directly (CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, Memory Stick and xD cards are supported) and print without the aid of a PC. An integrated screen helps you select the photos you want to print if you don't have your computer on. The device also comes with a flatbed scanner which is a further bonus, saving space and conveniently keeping all your image management in one place. All that's missing is a transparency adapter for converting slides. Performance Both the printer and the scanner work well. We tested printing photos on Lexmark's own photo paper and got superb results, with bright vibrant colour and crisp detail, printing borderless photos on standard 6 x 4in paper. The scanner will digitise images up to 1,200 x 2,400dpi (dots per inch), which should be more than enough for most peoples' needs and produces sharp results. Ease of use Lexmark has long championed simple-to-use software for its printers, and this is no different. It features a suite of options to help you get the most out of your images, from sharing them by email to printing them out, which brings all its functions together in one place. Value for money Both printers and scanners can be picked up quite cheaply nowadays but this is a feature-rich product with a lot of options. While you aren't making any savings by rolling both units into one, the integration of both with the extra digital camera features makes this worth the money, presuming you're looking to get hold of all its component parts.
Verdict
More Printers reviews:
A handy all-in-one photo printer and scanner that produces good results across the board. While you aren't going to make any savings by purchasing a two-in-one option like this, you do get the added benefit of a coherent interface plus it takes up less room on your desk. |
