This review updated: 01/10/2005 Featured in magazine: Issue 106 Manufacturer Contacts: Supplier: Kodak Web Address: www.kodak.com The latest camera from Kodak brings 4 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom for less than £200. Closing the gap between great features and affordable pricing, this latest digital camera from Kodak ups the ante on what you can expect to get in the competitive sub-£200 price bracket. Features While the 4-megapixel photo resolution is what you might expect nowadays, it's the 5x optical zoom that stands out in the features department. The only downside is that it needs a substantial case to fit it in, but Kodak has made the most of this necessity with a comfortable case reminiscent of higher-end cameras – just don't try and squeeze it into your trouser pocket. Performance The camera is capable of taking great photos at a range of resolutions up to 4 megapixels (2,304 x 1,728 pixels) and the powerful zoom provides plenty of options to help ensure that the subject of a picture is exactly what the photographer is looking for. Colours and tones come out well and the camera has settings to cope with specialist conditions such as macro close-ups and fast moving subjects. It can also take as much video footage as you can fit on a memory card (not supplied). Ease of use Kodak crams its cameras with easy-to-use features, from the unit itself to the included software that transfers pictures from it and organises them. The menu options are clear, attractive and easy to use, with plenty of control available to those who want it, alongside intelligent automatic controls for those less interested in refining their photography skills. Value for money It's the price that's the most attractive thing about the camera. With the sub-£200 price point proving to be a hard-fought arena for digital camera manufacturers, this is a bold step forward from Kodak. We think the gamble has paid off though – this is a very attractive package for the price, though you will have to fork out for more memory if you don't already have a suitably sized memory card.
Verdict
More Digital cameras reviews:
What we want most from a camera is the ability to take good photos, and for the price, this model certainly does the trick. The fact that it's got that handy zoom as well is a bonus, and the balance of ease of use with powerful features makes it a good all-rounder for any digital photographer looking to spend less than £200. |
