It's happened to us all. A memory card gets formatted before you've had a chance to take your photos off it, or a card becomes corrupt and your images are inaccessible. Whatever the situation, if you're trying to retrieve photos that have been lost or deleted, a solution may be available. Klix is one piece of software, specifically aimed at digital photographers, that may be able to help.

Features
The software is very straightforward. Simply plug the offending card into your computer (via a memory card reader or some other route), fire up the software and choose the location you want it to scan. The program then chugs through all the data on the memory card, including any deleted files it can still see, and recreates anything it thinks might be a picture. You can then recover files by saving them on your computer.

Performance
We found the software worked surprisingly well with recently deleted files. Older files might pose more of a problem as there's a greater chance that data may have been overwritten, making it trickier to reinstate it. However, we found this software very effective for recovering deleted files, which will help rescue you from that heart-sinking 'oh no' moment.

Ease of use
Using the software is very easy. When you insert your memory card, the software should find it instantly and you can then select it from a list. The scanning process starts automatically, bringing up a thumbnail list of all the images found on the card. If your lost picture is among those found, you can retrieve it by highlighting it and selecting Recover. If it's not there, sadly, the image remains lost.

Value for money
It's the price that's the main area of contention with this product. The software is aimed at digital photographers and it's certainly simple to use – especially for those who don't get much further into their technology than pressing the shutter button and downloading their photos. But anyone less perplexed by technology will find that there are plenty of free alternatives available on the internet which, although not specifically geared toward digital images, can be relied on to do a similar job of finding and recovering deleted files.

Verdict
Anyone who has ever found themselves at the wrong end of a deleted photograph will know the heartache involved. If your memory cards are prone to damage, perhaps because you have to share your camera with your family, then some decent, easy-to-use recovery software may be a worthwhile investment. It won't eradicate the heart attacks, but it will help heal them afterwards. Having said that, if you're technically savvy and don't necessarily need to be led by the hand through file recovery, you'll probably find better value elsewhere.
