This review updated: 13/08/2002 Featured in magazine: Issue 36, page 41 Manufacturer Contacts: Supplier: Digital Workshop Tel: 0870 120 2186 Web Address: www.digitalworkshop.com From the same stable as Paint Shop Pro, After Shot is a new software package designed to help avid digital photographers organise their photos. This kind of software is a great accompaniment to a photo printer, to make sure all your pictures are well organised and easy to find. After Shot is designed to do most of the simple tasks you might want to carry out on your image collection as you transfer it from your digital camera to your PC. Images can be collected into albums automatically by the software and catalogued by keyword so they're easy to find at a later date. The software also aims to simplify transferring your pictures onto the web and it's possible to perform simple image-processing tasks like cropping, rotating and removing redeye from images. This package works well as a simple tool with which to organise your photos. The image-editing options are basic but easy to use, and should suit most people who don't require complicated tasks like making composite images. The weakest links here are the online options – the package automatically links to an online service, but it's American. This is fine for sharing snaps, but terrible value if you're considering ordering professional prints. It's also possible to create your own web pages if you already have some space to store your images online, but the templates are cheesy and the layout options are limited. It would be difficult to get lost in this software, it's so simple to use. It comes with a good manual that guides you through most of the options, and it works with all the usual Windows standards, so you can do things like drag and drop images from one place to another. At £40 it is a little expensive – cheaper products like Ulead Photo Explorer (£29) perform a very similar job, so this might be a tad over-priced.
Verdict
More Image Editing reviews:
This is a useful tool for organising your pictures and will also get them on the web if you wish. It's a little over-priced for what you get, but comes from a reputable software developer, is easy to use and is excellent for organising pictures. It's just a bit of a shame that the online connection is American and there aren't more options to automatically create your own web pages. |
