The Scanjet 3970 continues HP's long tradition of high-quality, easy-to-use scanners. Its range of powerful features and intuitive software makes it the ideal choice for amateur photographers, small offices and creative types alike.

Although bulkier than some units, the 3970 has an attractive grey design that should add a touch of class to your desktop. Its lid can be completely removed for scanning books and boxes, and incorporates a built-in transparency material adapter. Into this you can slot 35mm slides and negatives (two at a time) to transfer to your PC or Mac for posterity, or print out for all to enjoy.

Four buttons sit on the front of the scanner, offering one-touch access to the software's main functions: automatic scanning and copying; sharing photos via email or on the web; editing and enhancing images; and creating multimedia CD slideshows of your memories.

While other scanners are packaged with individual programs, the HP software is handily integrated into one interface, which makes working with scans incredibly simple and stress-free. More confident users can experiment with the settings available or choose to scan through a separate TWAIN-compatible image processor offering more advanced options. You can even upload and obtain professional-quality prints of your scans via the HP Photo website.

Verdict
The scan quality is superb, producing bright digital versions of our test photos with wonderfully vibrant colour. Justifying the resolution of 2,400 x 2,400 dpi (dots per inch), they're also very sharp, picking out even the finest of details. Scanning speed is equally impressive, adding another string to the bow of this terrific, all-round scanner.
