As digital cameras work their way into so many homes, printers are racing to keep up with our demands. The HP Photosmart 7450 has taken this on board and can start churning out printed photos straight from your camera's memory card, without the need to turn your computer on. Just stick your card in the slot, print an index of thumbnails and select the images you want.

Plug it into your PC and you've got a range of extra options. As well as the driver software it comes with goodies galore, including extra software to edit and share your images.

Moving from normal printing to photo printing involves swapping the main black cartridge for a softer colour cartridge. Handily, the printer comes with a secret compartment and a cartridge holder for storing the spare one while it's not in use, and a click-on mini paper tray for smaller sized photo papers.

The resulting prints are fantastic, producing the best skin tones of the bunch. Although it didn't win our landscape or text-printing test, it came extremely close, making it a great all-rounder. The cartridge swapping makes it harder to use though, along with a few other factors like the need to align the print head manually when you insert a new cartridge.

Verdict
All this can't detract from the balance of features and price though, which is fantastic news for digital photographers. At a good £10 cheaper than its closest rival, all corners covered for home printing and photography needs, and smashing results from its prints, this is a tough model to beat.
