Google's webmail service offers 2.8GB of storage space, is fast and behaves just like a Desktop application – in fact most of the time it's easy to forget you're working on the web.

The way it operates takes a little getting used to at first. You search for messages rather than sorting them in a particular order and conversations are stacked, so if someone sends you two emails in quick succession you may not immediately notice the second one. Instead of organising messages into folders, you give them labels and important mail can be starred.

Google Mail has a spell-checker, auto-save facility and instant messenger for those times when email isn't instant enough.

You can send attachments of up to 20MB in size, and when you receive files you have the choice of downloading them or, where appropriate, viewing the contents as HTML or opening it in another one of Google's services. A Word document can be opened in Google Docs, for example.

You can send and receive messages using multiple email accounts and set up filters to handle incoming mail. Perhaps its most impressive feature, however, is the powerful spam filter which catches the majority of junk mail with ease.
