The Perfection 3590 has a maximum scanning resolution of 3,200dpi, recognises 48-bit colour and hooks up to your computer with a fast USB 2.0 connection.

Operation of the scanner is conveniently broken down into three modes: an intelligent automatic setting for quick scans; a home mode for general use; and a professional option for when you really want to get the best from your scanner.

There are lots of options built-in, such as the option to scan directly to PDF files at the touch of button, which is useful if you want to share high-quality digital images of documents. It also uses TWAIN drivers, so will work with the usual huge range of imaging-editing software. And if you've got a stack of negatives you want to scan it has a highly efficient automatic film loader that'll take six 35mm negatives each go.

Verdict
Our test scans came out a bit dark on the automatic settings. This is nothing that can't be fixed, either by adjusting the scanner's settings in one of the other modes or fiddling with the picture in an image processor once you're done, but it would have been nice to get closer to perfection by default.
