With a maximum resolution of 2,400 x 4,800 dpi, the Epson Perfection 2480 Photo boasts double the pixel power of similarly priced scanners. This means that, with the aid of its built-in film adapter, you can generate prints of up to A3 size from 35mm negatives and slides. You can also apply colour restoration and dust removal tools to your old, faded photographs, and archive flawless digital versions of them.

The 2480 Photo is very straightforward to use, sporting dedicated buttons for scanning directly to your computer, to email, to a printer or to a specified folder. In Automatic mode it instantly detects the type of document being scanned, for instance a page of black-and-white text or a colour photo, and adjusts the scan settings accordingly. Alternatively, you can select Home or Professional mode to gain greater manual control over the scanning process.

Verdict
Our test documents scanned quickly and quietly, yielding images of fantastic definition, if slightly dark. Added value comes from the eclectic range of software bundled with the scanner, including image-editing, OCR and project-creation programs, from which you can choose those you want to install.
