Although you can easily use Diigo as a simple note-taking tool, it also has aspirations to take on the likes of Del.icio.us as a means of sharing bookmarks. There isn't a giant leap between note-taking and bookmarking, so it's handy that Diigo has a unique feature that accommodates the possibility that you are already committed to an online bookmarking service, letting you bookmark to it automatically at the same time as you annotate.

To get the most out of Diigo, it's recommended that you download either the toolbar (Firefox, Internet Explorer and Flock) or 'Diigolet' (also available for Safari and Opera). The toolbar offers all Diigo's options so they're available at all times, while Diigolet lets you get most of the core functionality on any computer that can't have the toolbar installed on it. With either option it's quick and easy to highlight text, make a sticky note of the stuff you want to keep and move it around the page, or go to the Diigo website and view all your notes to date. You can also tag notes for future reference and make them public or private.

The social aspect springs from these public notes. You can choose to view or ignore other people's notes and you can create groups of like-minded people. Diigo also lets you share your annotations with those that don't have the software toolbar installed.

The possibilities with this software are almost limitless. The only downside is that for those who simply want to take notes, all these extra features may just get in the way.
